GEO and AI visibility
What generative engine optimization (GEO) is, and how EZ SEOS measures, prioritizes, changes, and proves AI-answer presence with the Visibility Engine.
GEO is the work of understanding and improving how your brand and pages show up when people ask AI tools questions, not only when they search Google. Mentions, citations, share of voice, and AI referral traffic are the measurable bits. The goal is simple: when a buyer asks an AI something you should answer, your brand has a fair shot at showing up for real.
EZ SEOS treats that as a Visibility Engine, not a one-off report. You measure how you appear, decide what to fix next, apply content and access changes, re-measure for Proof, and watch whether AI referral traffic moves. Brand lookup and the prompt explorer sit inside that loop. They are surfaces, not the whole product. Marketing overview of the engine: AI visibility (/features/ai-visibility).
Why does GEO matter?
Buyers already ask AI the same questions they used to type into Google. If the answer engines never mention you, or they cite a competitor's page, you lose the conversation before it hits your site. Mentions, citations, share of voice (with honesty gates when samples are thin), and AI referral traffic make that loss measurable so you can prioritize and prove work instead of shipping a content wish list.
The Visibility Engine loop
Work moves through stages:
- Measure. Brand lookup (/docs/ai-visibility), prompt explorer (/docs/prompt-explorer), AI Overview flags in rank tracking (/docs/rank-tracking), weekly snapshots, and honest share of voice so you are not treating thin samples like gospel.
- Decide. The Do Next queue rolls rank, content gaps, CTR, AI citations, and technical or entity issues into one prioritized list. Opportunities can surface AI-prompt gaps. Citation loss diagnosis shows where you used to show up and stopped.
- Change. Site Changes propose create-or-improve content actions aimed at question targets. Citation readiness and related entity coverage help you see whether a page is even fit to get cited.
- Access hygiene. AI crawler access audits catch robots and access problems that keep answer engines from reading you. Hallucinated AI-referral 404s catch URLs models invent and send traffic toward that do not exist.
- Prove. Re-measure after work lands. Proof is whether citations and AI referrals moved, not whether someone shipped a slide. Analytics covers the AI referral side (/docs/analytics).
Core measurement surfaces (keep four, mark incomplete alone)
These four show up a lot in GEO work. Alone, none of them is the full engine.
- Brand lookup: mentions, citations, SoV-style competitive view for ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews. Hard caps and coverage rules live on AI visibility (/docs/ai-visibility).
- Prompt explorer: dig into prompts and how answers cite the web. See prompt explorer (/docs/prompt-explorer).
- AIO in rank tracking: AI Overview context beside classic rank work. See rank tracking (/docs/rank-tracking).
- AI-prompt gaps: opportunity-style gaps for prompts you should care about. See opportunities (/docs/opportunities).
Use them to measure. Then go through Do Next, Site Changes, access hygiene, and Proof so measurement turns into decisions and verified change.
Do Next (what to fix next)
Do Next is one queue across rank issues, content gaps, CTR problems, AI citation work, and technical or entity cleanup. You do not need five separate priority lists fighting each other.
The agent is built to lead people here: grounded tools, cost shown for paid actions, a clear "what next" instead of a wall of data. How judgment and approvals work is on the agent (/docs/the-agent).
Site Changes and Proof
Site Changes are ranked content actions with question targets attached. The lifecycle is propose, apply, then verify. You are not collecting recommendations forever. You ship, then you check.
Proof is the re-measure step: did citations or AI referral behavior move after the change?
Related GEO diagnostics
A few diagnostics sit next to the main loop and matter a lot in practice:
- Citation readiness: is this page actually citable for the questions you care about?
- AI access / robots: can crawlers that feed answer systems reach what they need?
- Hallucinated 404s: are AI systems sending people to URLs you never published?
- Covered topics / entity readiness: do you look complete and consistent on the topics you claim?
They feed Decide and Change. They are not a separate product category for their own sake.
SEO and GEO share foundation
Classic technical SEO, clear pages, and real demand still matter. GEO does not replace that foundation. It extends what you measure and prove into AI answers. After meaningful site changes, IndexNow can be an optional ship step so search systems hear about updates faster. Details live with site audits docs (/docs/site-audits), not as a separate GEO magic button.
